How to Digital Garden

aka. renewed intentions for this space.

I have to confess that I didn’t really have much of a vision for this blog when I started it. So I think that really did give me pause in terms of how I can/should post – in terms of what I could post about.

Obviously, I do have opinions and thoughts because I share them all the time with my loved ones (and strangers too haha). I do have ideas too, I even wrote them down… But why isn’t it coming to fruition? Why don’t I have energy to do the thing?

Anyway, I’m still working through the question, which is somewhat existential too haha. But I stumbled upon a couple of videos recently that really kickstarted this thought process in me… and given me some ideas on things to work on.

First: How to engage with content?

The first was this video by Rachelle in theory, which was talking about engaging actively with our content:

For the purposes of this post, what I took away from the video was that:

  1. We are all consuming way too much content. We don’t know that because the information is broken down into small bits. Our brains can’t handle it. She uses this analogy of our brains being a cup, and information being water – the water is overflowing but we can’t/won’t drink the water… maybe because it won’t stop flowing.
  2. We’re going wide – we’re not going deep – in terms of the spectrum of topics that we’re engaging with. By itself, this isn’t a bad thing. But it’s scary to think about spending hours on IG and having nothing to show for it… I’ve come across a few videos that specifically call out for engaging more thoughtfully with the content that we are currently consuming. And I personally resonate deeply with this and am trying to move toward that.

Second: How to store the content?

The second video was by Joy Agenda – about how she’s been working through and deciding what systems she wants to use for 2026:

I especially enjoyed seeing how she had different “classes” of information – which was a very helpful way for me to think through what information I was currently tracking, and where I wanted to keep such information.

realisations from all that

On my end, here is what I realised:

  1. I do want to go “deep”. I have so many things that I want to learn/research on, but I have no idea where to start. I’m too busy scrolling.
  2. I want to keep exploring. Just because I’m wanting to focus doesn’t negate my desire for exploration. In fact, I think we need both to lead a sustainable existence. There’s a time for everything – so to me, it’s about being intentional about it.
  3. I want to start tracking what data I’m capturing and where it’s being captured. I have no idea what “systems” I’m using, and what’s actually living on those “systems’”. What I realised is that it’s OK to have different apps (for now haha) – but having a map to where information is stored is crucial then. This can help me if I want to gather all the “ingredients” for a “recipe” – e.g. writing a post, or an unpublished reflection. It’s all there, I just have to tie it together.

where do we go from here – part one

Ok, like every TikTok girlie at the start of fall – I have totally fallen for this whole “personal curriculum” shtick. But I love that it lends a structure to the thing I want to learn – in terms of timeframes, content and application. (I watched this, found this write up thought-provoking, and was also encouraged/motivated by the guidance in this post)

I also really love the concept of a digital garden. I wish that this space could be this – where things are kinda unfinished, where the notes are being taken and updated contemporaneously – read more about this concept here and find an inspiring example here. But I’m kinda hindered by my ability to code and what “ready” templates are available on WordPress haha. It’s fine, we’ll work with it… until I get sick of it or spooked by privacy concerns.

where do we go from here – part two

Ok, so here’s what I’m thinking.

To help me go “deep”, I’m trying this thing where I identify topics to read up on + reflect on. I suspect that this is going to look more like book reviews, but the posts will have tags for specific topics of interest. I think that I’ll probably write a post on a quarterly basis to “announce” what the topics are going to be.. because I want to, hehe. then it would be easier to devise + identify tags that would help me to see what posts belong to these topics.

To help me “explore”, I’ll just be posting ad-hoc posts on everything else, because that’s the fun part about having a blog? like, being an aunty and posting about food that I made or ate… It’s a good exercise in helping me to reflect on what’s been happening (slowing down time) + discover what I’m interested in (engage in possibility thinking). I need to think about what tag I wanna put on those too, heh.

To help me “tie it all together” – I’ve added in a page at the top of this website. Working title is “bird’s eye view”. The idea is that similar to the above example at rat factor, I’ll keep a running list of things that I’m learning about + doing. At the minimum, it’ll be a list of my “quarterly” topics… dare I even think about listing creative endeavours here? It’s still early days. I’m shy!

In conclusion, I think, I just want to talk to myself? hahaha. But I think I realised that it’s also good to have people along for the ride. there’s obviously things that I’m not going to post about here cos it’s just for me. And maybe it’ll be a process to work that out as well in this brave new world…

But anyway, I hope that this place becomes a kind of under garden – fomenting with ideas and allowing for thoughts to compost and become something different.

Hope you’ll stick around. I need to stop writing now, I’m feeling it in my carpal tunnels.

Kbye
