I watched this video recently, and took some notes… Thought it would be a waste just to let it languish – so I’m going to log it here as a “slip note” of sorts.
Learnings:
- Paper works for thinking because the act of handwriting helps us to remember things better.
- Writing things out forces us to think about what we are hearing and to reframe the idea in our own words.
- Working things out on paper also means that we are able to use non-linear methodologies (e.g. drawing) to illustrate/work-out what we are going through. This can also be helpful for us to ideate on ways to proceed in certain scenarios/problems. Some examples of such non-linear methodologies would be: mindmaps, timelines, Eisenhower matrices, backward mapping.
- A note on tools: Find something that you’re comfortable with messing up – you will be thinking on the page, so it might get messy!

I felt a bit frustrated watching and reflecting on this video. I’m thinking that I was really looking forward to hearing an insight that would allow me to overcome my humanness and my slowness at learning.
Writing takes time. But that just reminds me that learning is slow. And sometimes, it doesn’t really go in the way that I want.
But perhaps that is part of the journey. And maybe, it is OK to slow down. Our brains weren’t made for consuming information 24/7. A timely reminder. I am such an impatient person.
